    About us

After many years of modifying and building computer cases, it was time to take the next step and completely construct cases from scratch. Stepping outside of the box, as it were, Head-Cases designs and prototypes ideas that no longer follow the classic box dimensions of a standard ATX casing, but instead follow a different path in design.

Taking ideas that provoke and stand out are key features in the design, along with the ability to reduce the carbon footprint, not only by shrinking overall case size but increasing the power efficiency required to run a computer...

Wooden TARDIS (Ben Austin 2005 designs)

Taking the technical drawings and plans from Ben Austin 6th Jan 2005 we have designed an exact model in CAD. We are very excited about the project as wood is a very renewable source and the texture and feel is considerably different to the aluminium cases we are fond of.

Head Cases spent much of 2009 to the present day in communication with many leading global component manufacturers to obtain data and samples regarding cutting edge technology.

Technology and specifications supplied is a major part of the developement and we are thankful for all the companies that came forward with hardware and information that makes it possible for Head Cases to operate

Head Cases is based in Dorset, Southern England and only uses local companies to supply and manufacture casings.

Although manufacturing abroad can be beneficial to costs, Head Cases is proud to support the British industry as best we can. The vast majority of metal working and prototyping is done within Dorset.

With direct communication to local companies, Head Cases has found that the highest quality is ensured in every build and we wish to pass this on to you.

The metal used is the highest quality aluminium, which is carefully brushed, shaped and even welded for the cases we produce. Some of the cases are anodised whilst others in our range are carefully powder coated and further details wet painted.

Every component that is used is high quality with lengthy warranty, to ensure piece of mind. Each unit is checked and double checked prior to wrapping and should be in perfect condition.

The components we select are at the pinnacle of the market place, bringing the fastest and latest technology to you in a stylish, eye catching case that is sure to turn heads.

This is the case that started it all. Originally as a one off for myself, I realised the massive amount of Dr Who fans that would treasue the same case.

In 2009 I spent months meeting various component manufacturers and talking about heat, power and energy efficient components that could be utilised.

The case itself at the time was a fair bit smaller than the standard ATX cases. This was based on the Mini-ITX platform, a new a revolutionary smaller motherboard.

After creating a "frankenstein" case, you know the type, card, plastic, sticky tape and so on, we took it to the next level - Metal.

A few months later and a mini fortune spent, the first case took shape, at the time it was awe inspiring, but looking back now, the detailing was quite some way off.

This was made very obvious when I met the BBC Dr Who design team, these guys really know every detail of every Dr Who item and after spending 18 months in meetings with them the final edition took shape.

As with all our products, Scan computers are the only distributor for this and other cases.

The second generation, smaller and more detailed than the first.

In 2014, I was handed a small format Intel motherboard, 105mm x 105mm but housing an i7 cpu.

Instantly ideas sprung from everywhere, iconic cases that could be designed around this, none more so than the original TARDIS case.

Taking the 2005 Ben Austin diagrams and technical drawings I set about redesigning the original plans for the mini-itx case.

The first prototype I made for this was in metal, but it just didnt have the appeal that it demanded, you can find an image in the gallery.

It was then I had the idea to find a wood strong enough to add feel and texture, would it be possible to make a prototype to withstand all the scenarios that metal goes through for pc casings?.

To my suprise, yes, wood matches metal in nearly all circumstances, with one exception - noise reduction, and in this test it exceeds metal in every way.

It took a few months to find the right type of wood, a wood that is renewable, a wood that has the right grain and effect and a wood that is strong enough, eventually "larch" was chosen.

    PORTAL 2 Cube..

In 2013, I started playing a game called Portal, a none violent game (pretty much) that requires you to solve various puzzles to escape a building complex.

The game itself is incredibly addictive, just one more level then bed, oh wait its 4am kind of addicitive.

In the game are various types of "cubes" each designed to help or not, in your bid to escape.

These cubes are very iconic and I just had to design one, so speaking with ValVe in length and detail, I am now licensed by them.

Currently still in the prototype stages and pre-public release I am hoping to release towards the mid or end of 2015.

The prototypes as you can see in the gallery are mainly metal, but do use varios other materials in construction.

The corners and centers are currently 3D printed, however the final version with be completed with a "rubber/synthetic/polymer" when I can find one to suit!

Lastly, to those who kindly told me that the "top hart symbol" isnt flat to the case, yes I am aware, its actually the on/off button ! (But thankyou for noticing the detailing.)

    Exterminate

While designing the first TARDIS in 2010 I came across some DALEK plans

This project is currently shelved due to final estimated sales costs. The current form is all aluminium except the skirt-bumper which is acrylic (not ideal, but proves the working model).

While I had a lot of fun designing this casing, the costings would make this a non-financially viable option for the public.

I am considering redesigning a considerablly small unit based on the NUC boards - so watch this space..

While some of you may be able to work out the CAD drawing, I cannot say too much about this project.

I am extremely excited to say however that I am being helped by a very talented illustrator for this well known icon.

    Design

Ok, you got up one day and had an idea, or you saw a shape and thought I wish I had that...

I know exactly where you are coming from and where you are trying to get to.

Although Head Cases is an in house design company we can appreciate the struggle involved trying to get your idea into reality.
Im not saying its easy, but we can certainly help in some ways.

If we think your idea has market appeal and is financially viable we will do our best to design your idea and give you a working concept.

    Prototyping

This is really a second stage in the life cycle of a project, you have your proven designs and now want a solid working model to prove the theories.

We have relationships with some of the largest plastics and metal companies in the UK. If our friends cannot supply it, it doesnt exsist or its illegal!

The last part in the project, get your item to the market place.

You have your item ready to sell, but you cant find a distribution line?

We have contacts with the UK's largest computer logistics company.

If your idea becomes a reality, we will introduce you directly.
